Bonfire Night 2019

Procession and Firework Evening
Due to exceptionally bad weather on the planned evening of our traditional event on the first Saturday in November, a brave decision was made to move this date to Sunday 3rd. Although our spectator numbers were down by around 50% a splendid time was had by all, on such a lovely, dry, and moonlit evening, providing a great procession and brilliant firework display. The key driver of launching fireworks is wind. The Saturday was very wet and windy with high wind speed gusts. Even Battle were unable to launch fireworks on the night due to the wind speeds, but at least Winchelsea went ahead although a day late. Some fantastic photos can be found on winchelsea.com. Thank you to everyone who took part, attended, and donated.

Churchyard Christmas Lights
Once again, it is our intention to light one of the trees in the churchyard in time for the ‘Lights of Love Service’. Whilst WGFS facilitate this, a huge thank you to R & S Paine Electrical Contractors of Rye who supply, fit and take down the lighting at no cost. It is their way of saying thank you to our Town and its custom.

Carol Singing at the New Inn
By popular demand, you are invited to join us in the New Inn on Saturday evening, 14th December at 6.30pm for traditional carol singing in the pub, led by the Hopkins family and friends. All are welcome. There will be a collection for the Royal Marsden Hospital Children’s Unit, so please give generously. As always the Town will look great as Friday 13th sees the launch of ‘Winchelsea Christmas Windows’

Annual Meeting 11th January
Everyone is welcome to join us at the New Hall at 11.45am for our AGM, although, only existing members are entitled to vote.  After two years of a very successful Society, some (not all) of the existing committee team will be standing down. As with every year, a new committee will need to be need to be proposed, and elected at the AGM. If you would like to express an interest to join the committee team or require more information, please contact Peter Cosstick via email at winchelseaguyfawkes@btinternet.com by 28th December.

Cheque Presentation
On Saturday evening, 11th January at 6.30pm at the New Inn there is a cheque presentation to ‘The Fiends of Conquest Hospital’ – a busy day and evening on the 11th! At our last AGM it was agreed that some funds raised from WGFS activities would be earmarked for a chosen charity or appeal. This year, these funds will be given to the current CAT scanner appeal, for the Conquest Hospital. This will be a joint cheque presentation with the Winchelsea Christmas Windows team who have also pledged that funds raised from Christmas Windows will go towards this appeal. Great news. It will be a very informal evening and we hope to see you there to raise a glass to the New Year.
