Volunteers run guided tours of some of Winchelsea’s medieval cellars each year.
All proceeds are re-invested in the town, either in the repair and maintenance of the historic buildings owned by Winchelsea Corporation or in the contents and displays in the Court Hall Museum.
Scroll down to see this year’s dates. Tours take place each Saturday between mid-April and late October, plus some Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
Tours cost £6 per person – free for children.
Tour bookings can be made via email@example.com or on 07596 182874. Private tours for special interest groups of between 15 and 25 people can also be arranged.
The town’s largest cellar, under Blackfriars Barn and owned by the National Trust, is opened free to the public on Winchelsea Fete Day – August 10 – and during Heritage Open Days – September 14 and 15.
All tours except those to Blackfriars Barn start at 11 am. Please be at the Town Well in Castle Street TN36 4EL about 10 minutes before the start. Tours take about 1½ hours. You are advised to wear sensible shoes and to carry a torch, as some cellar steps are worn and uneven.
The tours are operated by the Winchelsea Cellar Tours Team comprising volunteers for the Friends of the Ancient Monuments & Museum (registered charity number 1001486) and Winchelsea Archaeological Society (registered charity number 1143524)
