LATEST NEWS

Look down and then look up!

When you go into the New Hall sometime soon, you won’t fail to notice that the floor has been refurbished!  It was new in 1997 as part of the structural rescue project and has been appreciated since as a good dance floor. Unfortunately, the varnish was worn through in places and the Parana pine is not very robust so it has taken some knocks since!  We are fortunate to have received two major grants to add to our fundraising in 2025 to help with both this work and also the stage lighting renewal.

If you also look upwards you will notice that the stage lighting has been renewed – with low energy fittings now controlled by a new computerised desk.  Stage lighting designer Graham Large has been invaluable to the New Hall in devising an achievable scheme and putting us in touch with a specialist in Rye Harbour, EWP, who fit cruise ships worldwide with stage lighting!  This work was carried out in time for the Burns Night bash where the address to the haggis was spectacularly lit.

We would like to thank our supporters who donate to the New Hall, participate in the 100 Club (ask if you’d like to join) and residents who come to the various fundraising events which brought in £6,841 during 2025. Our lighting project was made possible thanks to #National Lottery players plus fantastic support from the Bernard Sunley Foundation in July of £5,000 which encouraged the National Lottery Community Fund to give £12,837 later the same month.  All these contributions have allowed us to go ahead with the floor refurbishment and the Stage lighting renewal.

We look forward to welcoming you in our Centenary Year for glittering stage shows and a series of exciting events!

Hiring the Hall

For just £15 per hour, individuals and groups can hire a large, light and airy hall, with a stage, professional kitchen, large dance floor, heating and lighting. The commercial rate is £17 per hour. Regular hirers who book for 10 or more occasions per year receive our discounted rate of £12 per hour.

Weekend Wedding hire from Friday mid-day to Sunday mid-day costs £900 for 2026 and £950 for 2027. There are fixed rates for bank holidays, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve of £100 for up to 4 hours, £200 for up to 7 hours and £300 for over 7 hours hire.

Licences

The hall has an entertainment licence, so you can perform, play music and watch films in the hall. The hall has an alcohol licence, but you may have to take out a temporary licence.

Fundraising

Although hiring out the hall covers most of our day to day running costs we continually need to raise funds for our next big projects. Recently these have been  the much needed upgrading and refurbishment of the ladies and gents toilets. The next large project will be to replace the outdated and now obsolete stage lighting system. Initial estimates for a complete replacement are in the region of £90,000 so we hope to be able to begin on a more gradual basis!

Please let a committee member know if you would like to make a donation towards our fundraising. Being a charity, gift aid applies.

Don’t forget you can also help by joining the “100 Club” which is a local lottery to raise funds for good causes. For just £2 per month or £24 for the year you can have your allocated number entered into the monthly draw and a chance to win £100 cash each month. You can join at any time! Contact Rosemarie Roberts or Ali Casey to sign up and help with our fundraising via our email newhall@winchelsea.com

ACCESSIBILITY

The hall has step free access through the front doors and a wide access door into the main hall. There is a fully accessible toilet next to the entrance door and cloakroom and further male and female toilets either side of the stage which have disabled facilities. There is a ramp to the decking area outside which overlooks the cricket ground and beautiful views over the Brede Valley.

We have very good acoustics in the hall together with a hearing loop.

Maintenance, repairs and improvements

We have carried out extensive refurbishment to the New Hall over the past few years. We have a  professional kitchen, new double glazed windows, accessible front door, new curtains, new stage curtains, exterior and interior redecoration and improved insulation to the roof and most recently an upgrade of the cloakroom and addition of a new accessible toilet all of which combine to make the hall an enjoyable and beautiful space!
