Rookery Cottage is a single wooden-framed property constructed from three former small cottages, as shown in the photograph below.

The building shown dates from the mid-late 18th century. The current building stands on part of the foundations of a much older building, set at right angles to the road, running back from the cellar doors that can be seen in the photograph. This older property is believed to have been constructed partly, at least, of stone, as the very fine late 13th century cellar beneath has extra support for a heavy structure above.

Considerable archaeological work has been carried out on this cellar, notably in 2005 and 2006. This led to the discovery of a set of additional stairs at the rear of the cellar, which have now been opened up and re-instated.
